Bob Logue

If you could cut your household expenses by $15,000 over the next ten years, would you be interested?

Consider this:

If you currently own a home in Allegheny County and moved to a county with lower real estate taxes, or decided to purchase a home in another county instead of buying one in Allegheny County (or other high tax counties), and if your total real estate taxes—county, municipal and school-- were just $1,500 per year lower, you would save$15,000 over the next ten years…and $30,000 over the next twenty years.

If you cut your total property taxes by just $2,000 per year, your ten-year savings would be $20,000…and your twenty-year savings amount to $40,000.

While Allegheny County’s population declined by over 8,000 in 2004 alone; two of the nearby lower tax counties grew…indicating people are beginning to understand how great the savings can be in the counties with lower property taxes.

Further, Allegheny County may well be forced into reassessments every one, two or three years…while the neighboring counties reassess much less frequently.

The masochist who enjoys attending reassessment hearings every year or two to fight for ‘fair’ assessments, and enjoys paying thousands of dollars more in property taxes should remain in Allegheny County.

When a family member asked my help in locating a home to purchase I alerted her to the much higher taxes she would pay if she bought a home in Allegheny County. She chose a neighboring county to buy her home.

The answer to the decline of City of Pittsburgh (and Allegheny County) as well as Philadelphia and most every other city in Pennsylvania, and the stagnation of the state, is to abolish all property taxes on primary residences. The sooner our ‘leaders’ stop fiddling while the people flee, and give the citizens a chance to vote on a constitutional amendment whether they favor this idea or not, the sooner our state, counties and municipalities will begin to grow and prosper again. ---
