What Can I Do To Help Abolish All Property Taxes On Primary Residences (homesteads and farmsteads)???

Those who for the first time are learning about S.T.O.P. (Stop Taxing Our Properties)--the statewide effort to abolish all property taxes (real estate taxes) on homesteads and farmsteads (primary residences); and those who were aware of the effort, and now have decided to get involved, often ask, "What can I do to help?"

Here are some answers:

I. Visit www.grandoldusa.com the S.T.O.P. web site and educate yourself about what S.T.O.P. is trying to accomplish, why we're dedicated to this cause, and how we are trying to accomplish it. If you support the effort after reading the material, commit yourself for the long haul. Government works slowly and any major reform will not occur overnight. The abolishment of all property taxes on homesteads and farmsteads is a major overhaul of the taxing system. The web site contains our legislation, how we propose to replace the lost revenue, legislative co-sponsors and a wealth of other information.

A. Download those materials you wish to share with others-- we especially recommend:

The Petition
STOP Plan Summary
The Most Vulnerable
The House That Wasn't Built
The Tax That Kills

Choose whatever else appeals to you. Print and distribute by any means possible the information that will help others get educated. Educating the public and public officials on all levels of government is vital.

B. Send the web site to everyone you know...either e-mail it if you have a computer, or send it by U.S. Mail.

II. Ignore the naysayers. It's easy to say "I'm not interested." "It won't work." Or, "That won't help me."

Keep in mind that when our nation was founded, the patriots had many people against them..even members of their own families. Historians say only about 1/3rd of the people then supported establishment of a new nation; 1/3rd favored staying a part of England; and the final 1/3rd didn't care one way or the other and had no intention of getting involved. Despite those odds, and at risk of their life and their worldly goods, the patriots persevered because they deeply believed what they were doing was right.

III. Circulate the petitions locally and through friends, relatives, business associates and others across the state of Pennsylvania, and have completed petitions sent to: S.T.O.P. c/o Bob Logue, 1291 Prospect Road Pittsburgh, PA 15227.

At this writing we have accumulated over 111,000 signatures on these petitions.

IV. Contact your county commissioners and municipal officials and urge them to support the abolishment of all property taxes on homesteads and farmsteads. There is a resolution at the web site which you can copy and share with your county commissioners and local municipal officials. Find the resolution at www.grandoldusa.com Ask them to formally endorse the resolution and send a copy to Governor Ed Rendell; legislators who serve their county or municipality; and one to S.T.O.P. care of Bob Logue, 1291 Prospect Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.

V. Encourage every organization of which you are a member, to pass a resolution condemning property taxes as a means of supporting schools, counties and municipalities. Wording can be secured from the Resolution found on the S.T.O.P. web site. Send copies of the resolution to Governor Ed Rendell, plus the legislators and county and municipal officials serving your area. Also send a copy to S.T.O.P. c/o Bob Logue, 1291 Pospect Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15227.

VI. Be creative in finding ways to get the S.T.O.P. message out to others.

Some suggestions are:

A. Letters to the editor--including daily, weekly and even monthly newspapers and publications.
B. Newsletters within your union, organization or faith.
C. Local internet community bulletin boards.
D. (With permission) set up a table at a high traffic location and hand out materials while collecting signatures. Avoid heated discussions. If someone doesn't want to sign or take material, move on to the next person. If you get one out of ten, that's one more than we had before.
E. Have a gathering of friends\relatives you know are unhappy with their property taxes. Don't 'force' them, or anyone to join the effort. Just provide them with the materials and the rest is up to them. People prodded to do something won't last anyway.

This paper is not meant to be a complete listing of ideas. Instead, it is just to offer a few suggestions that we hope will get you started thinking. Write a poem about the injustice of people having their home and equity stolen by property taxes. Design some posters. Write a song and perform it where and when you can. You are a talented, creative person, use your gifts from God for this righteous campaign.

My personal feelings on help lowering the property taxes starts with the mayors of each county. How can they get away with overspending the budget by 3 million or more dollars? Where would the average American citizen be if they overspent by 3 million-----IN JAIL! These mayors raise millions for their campaigns,I feel that they should have to raise the monies that were misallocated. Everyone else has to deal with the increasing prices of public utilities. I don't understand why they feel they are immune but still take it out on the citizens because they didn't plan for increases. An elder friend showed me an electric bill from the 1940's for 35 cents. The main topic is "why do these politicians feel that they are immune to spending more than they have," and raise property taxes to make up for it? Why is it OUR fault that you overspent?
