John Locke, whose writings are the foundation of our Constitution, wrote that of the specific powers granted to government, the most important is the protection of private property. The recent Supreme Court ruling regarding eminent domain (Kelo v. New London) and the burdensome property taxes imposed by local governments shows how far we have strayed from the intent of the Founders. The Founders were willing to lay their lives on the line in a revolt against crushing taxes but we, like the battered spouse who can't find the front door, just keep sending the same people back into office to threaten our property rights instead of protecting them. Their only answer is to make the taxes more palatable. This is like trying to add honey to castor oil.
There is only one acceptable solution -- get rid of property taxes altogether. I hope all property owners remember this next time they go to the polls.
