RAISING COUNTY REVENUE

A suggestion on how counties in Pennsylvania can raise revenue. Why not televise the hearings when people come before the county assessors to appeal their property tax assessment.

The show could be entitled: The Price Is Wrong!

Selling advertising on the show about how to get rich buying up properties at sheriff sale could generate revenue for the county.

The county executive or commissioners could serve as hosts wearing big red noses, baggy clothes, oversized shoes and large, fake flowers in their lapels.

If ratings for the show are too low, perhaps they could throw in video clips of people being evicted. We could all sit around and tell each other how sad it is. Shake our heads...and do nothing.

Or the county could have a competition to see which team of sheriff’s deputies could throw a family’s possessions out of the house the fastest. Or how about a wrestling cage match between those ‘investors’ buying up the homes of the victims? Winner takes all.

If all this sounds like a cruel joke…what do you call stealing a family or individual’s home based on faulty assessments:

taking their shelter, stealing most or all of their equity, and damaging their credit rating with property tax liens. It happens to tens of thousands of individuals and families every year in Pennsylvania. But, then, who in Harrisburg really cares enough to ABOLISH property taxes on primary residences (homesteads\farmsteads) and stop this horrid practice?---Bob Logue.

I listened to the hearings on HB 39, and looked at an analysis. This thing is not good. Sen Boscola even said, "it patches it up a bit" then you would be back working on it. Sen Wonderling in an interview with Sen Costa said"challenge us to do our job" challenge us?? He said that?? Is this the best you can do?? You have coped, out not made any decisions, put the decisions back on the local people so you can "blame as few of you as possible", and think the public will buy it. I don't think you should be back to "work on it". Cut costs, reduce school districts, legislation, give back excessive compensation, earmark gaming money for educational technology. Simple?? Just do it.

Please vote NO on HB 39 as it is NOT a fix to the property tax mess that
we have in PA. It is ONLY a temporary fix and you know that those
things temporary are always changed or repealed. We need a permanent
fix to encourage residents to stay in PA and to further encourage more
people to come here and look for jobs. If you do not know what the
solution is, consider the STOP proposal. It certainly is better than
any thing else that exists and will preserve people's homes and
eliminate many county political jobs for the assessors who don't have a
clue as to what property values are or should be. It will also
eliminate Sheriff sales and permit the sheriff devote his duties to
being a law enforcement officer and not in the home sale business.

Thank you for your attention.

Did you see the budget presentation by Rendell? I agree with the Republican rebuttal, I would like to see the money he saved also. I didn't know the Pennsylvania economy was so good. I am lucky, I am retired. I would hate to be a young person coming up and trying to find a good job, of course, as I understand it a lot of our young people are "voting with their feet".

But then, If our economy is as bad as the Republicans say, "in the tank" I think was the term used, and there isn't the money saved Rendell said there is, where were they going to get the money for the raise?? Interesting how these guys think, no money for property tax relief, but money for a raise??
