S.T.O.P.

Why are we saying "STOP!" in Pennsylvania?

The systemic inequity in the property tax that can never be overcome since nearly every property and home is unique. The inconvenience and cost of attending a reassessment hearing to try to have your taxes lowered, only to have the property reassessed again the following year necessitating a repetition of that process. The tremendous cost of these reassements, hearings, sizable fees to tax collectors. These are some of the reasons why YOU are being asked to join an effort to eliminate the property tax on the 'homestead' -- those homes which a person owns and occupies.

Allegheny County alone spent over $23 million dollars on a reassessment program that produced such inequities that 90,000 property owners filed appeals. Perhaps thousands more felt it useless to appeal and will pay the unfair, higher taxes even though they are not fair. Additionally, those who did go through the appeals process-- and everyone else-- are now faced with a new YEARLY reassessment that could require them to do it again each year.

KDKA Undercover Club host, Bob Logue believes the property tax on the homestead should be eliminated entirely. Several proposals are being considered in the PA legislature, but some merely reduce the tax, or simply remove the school portion. Logue disagrees with any proposal that allows the property tax on the homestead to remain in any form.

"The citizens of Pennsylvania voted for the Homestead Amendment that permits the home they own and occupy to be taxed differently than commercial or industrial property. With the election for governor coming up we have the chance to pressure candidates for governor and the legislature to make a written pledge to get rid of this horrific tax on the homestead once and for all. We believe the revenue needed to fill the gap can come from income, sales and use taxes."

Those wishing to help with this effort should do the following:

  1. Take the petition from this website and make additional copies; have voters sign it; and send it to:
    S.T.O.P.
    care of Bob Logue
    KDKA Radio
    Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
  2. At every opportunity, demand that the candidates for governor join the effort and, in writing pledge to eliminate the property tax on the homestead. Tell them you will NOT vote for them unless they agree to do this in writing.
  3. Talk to your organizations, friends and relatives and urge them to be involved as well by circulating petitions and spreading the word.
  4. Demand that your legislators take the lead in this effort.

STOP: Stop Taxing Our Properties can only succeed if you care enough to be involved.

Use Tax is PA's newest nightmare... Buy anything over the internet or mail order lately? Guess what you owe PA 6% on that purchase plus tax on the shipping amount.
They are targeting the businesses which is just a start trust me...
Buy a nice big screen TV online and saved a bundle on the tax? Not when you get PA's tax bill in the mail.

This is only one of two tax assaults being made.
Twice this year there were motions in the PA government to tax all food and clothing items.

If they ever do repeal the prop[erty tax, which I doubt it will be countered by these two babies.

Hey they gotta get their new raises somehow don't they...
