Dear Mom and Dad
Dear Mom & Dad: Hope this note finds you both well. We love you. Just wanted to let you know that Julie and I have paid off the mortgage on our home…and finally, the house is OURS! Take care, talk to you soon. Love, Your Son.
Dear Son: Mom and I are so proud of both of you and we are delighted to hear you paid off your house mortgage. We don’t want to burst you bubble but in Pennsylvania we never own our homes; we just rent them from the School Board, County Commissioners and Municipal Officials.
Paying our rent (property taxes) allows us to live in the house for another year. Our annual property taxes when computed on a monthly basis now exceed what we used to pay each month for our home mortgage. Son, even if a home is mortgage free, we are all just one major illness from being unable to pay the property taxes, and therefore we’re just one major illness from having our home sold at sheriff sale... and having our home’s equity or value stolen from us through a sheriff sale.
You may not believe this, but an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 individuals and families just like us…lose their home to sheriff sale in Pennsylvania each year.
Governor Rendell and our legislators need not worry about losing their homes. Unlike us, they have lifetime, full health benefits for them and their spouse paid for by the taxpayers. The health benefits continue for the spouse if the legislator dies first. And they recently raised their pensions by 50% (also paid for by the taxpayers) so their pensions are much greater than common working people will get, and, again, if the legislator dies first, their spouse continues to receive the full pension. Wouldn’t you like to be able to vote yourself a 50% pension increase, son?
Since their homes will never be in jeopardy, Governor Rendell and many of the legislators don’t see any reason to correct the assessment\reassessment\sheriff sale mess.
Enjoy your ‘paid off’ home son. We pray that you and Julie never become seriously ill and face the loss of the home you both have worked so hard for. I wish you truly ‘owned’ the home but until the people of Pennsylvania wake up to the fact they are only renting their home from the government... I guess we all must live in fear that we may one day face eviction.
Love, Dad and Mom

- Dear STOP, Your action is commendable. Please keep up the fight. Another area to consider is repeal of the eminant domain. That is just as bad if not worse than the overwhelming tax burden we face. Thank You for taking a stand. GG
